Images of resistance: A photonarrative enquiry into the meanings of personal artwork for people living with cancer
This study explored the meanings, inspirations and subjective significance of personal artwork created as a leisure activity by women living with cancer. A convenience sample of twelve women aged between 23-74 years participated in semi-structured interviews. Participants were living in various stages of the cancer trajectory, and engaged in several forms of visual art-making. They submitted examples of their artwork by photograph and then participated in semi-structured interviews. From a phenomenological analysis, the authors inferred a number of themes. Participants perceived a few pieces, made during chemotherapy, as expressing deeper feelings about cancer in symbolic terms. More prevalent in participants’ accounts were references to their artwork as a sensuous pleasure, and its confirmation of their ongoing capability, personal continuity and social connectedness. Participants acknowledged ongoing loss and difficulties related to cancer. However, each piece of art offered a measure of resistance against the psychologically and socially disruptive effects of cancer. The pre-interview photography activity was helpful for empowering participants in the interview, and for stimulating detailed memories and associations

Inpatients’ perspectives of occupational therapy in acute mental health
Background
Research into service users’ views of occupational therapy in acute mental health is extremely limited. This collaborative study between South West London and St George’s Mental Health NHS Trust and Brunel University (UK) obtained inpatients’ perspectives of occupational therapy.
Methods
Service users and occupational therapists were involved in designing a self-report questionnaire and, following training, in recruiting participants and collecting data.
Results
Sixty-four (28.6%) inpatients responded and most had met an occupational therapist who had explained the purpose of their intervention. The most frequent group interventions were arts and crafts, relaxation, community meetings, cookery, sports and gym, with the latter two rated as most beneficial. There was much less choice about individual goals and interventions. A highly significant and positive correlation was found between occupational therapy meeting the needs of individuals and it improving their daily functioning and quality of their admission.
Conclusions
Occupational therapists need to provide more individual interventions and more fully involve inpatients in deciding on individual goals. Group interventions, which are meaningful, relevant and with an occupational focus, are most beneficial. Further research examining the effectiveness of cookery and sport and gym and establishing the benefits of engaging in group and individual intervention on acute wards is warranted
Effects of polarization mode dispersion on polarization-entangled photons generated via broadband pumped spontaneous parametric down-conversion
An inexpensive and compact frequency multi-mode diode laser enables a compact two-photon polarization entanglement source via the continuous wave broadband pumped spontaneous parametric down-conversion (SPDC) process. Entanglement degradation caused by polarization mode dispersion (PMD) is one of the critical issues in optical fiber-based polarization entanglement distribution. We theoretically and experimentally investigate how the initial entanglement is degraded when the two-photon polarization entangled state undergoes PMD. We report an effect of PMD unique to broadband pumped SPDC, equally applicable to pulsed pumping as well as cw broadband pumping, which is that the amount of the entanglement degradation is asymmetrical to the PMD introduced to each quantum channel. We believe that our results have important applications in long-distance distribution of polarization entanglement via optical fiber channels.1111Ysciescopu
Experimental demonstration of high fidelity entanglement distribution over decoherence channels via qubit transduction
Quantum coherence and entanglement, which are essential resources for quantum information, are often degraded and lost due to decoherence. Here, we report a proof-of-principle experimental demonstration of high fidelity entanglement distribution over decoherence channels via qubit transduction. By unitarily switching the initial qubit encoding to another, which is insensitive to particular forms of decoherence, we have demonstrated that it is possible to avoid the effect of decoherence completely. In particular, we demonstrate high-fidelity distribution of photonic polarization entanglement over quantum channels with two types of decoherence, amplitude damping and polarization-mode dispersion, via qubit transduction between polarization qubits and dual-rail qubits. These results represent a significant breakthrough in quantum communication over decoherence channels as the protocol is input-state independent, requires no ancillary photons and symmetries, and has near-unity success probability.1132Ysciescopu
Linking solar and long baseline terrestrial neutrino experiments
We show that in the framework of three light neutrino species with
hierarchical masses and assuming no fine tuning between the entries of the
neutrino mass matrix, one can use the solar neutrino data to obtain information
on the element of the lepton mixing matrix. Conversely, a measurement
of in atmospheric or long baseline accelerator or reactor neutrino
experiments would help discriminate between possible oscillation solutions of
the solar neutrino problem.Comment: revtex, 4 pages, no figures. Discussion of the LOW solution modified;

Living in a time of COVID: exploring the lockdown experiences of people living with long-term physical and mental health conditions in the UK
Introduction: During the pandemic, the UK imposed lockdown measures to slow the transmission,
minimise hospitalisations and protect the population’s physical health from the COVID-19
coronavirus. However, this was implemented with little consideration of the broader mental health
and wellbeing implications for those with pre-existing physical or mental health conditions. This
study explored the lived experiences of adults deemed vulnerable and required to shield, and the
psychological, social, emotional and physical impacts of the lockdown upon their daily lives.
Method: Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 14 adults living in London with stroke,
Breathing difficulties or a mental condition during the first COVID-19 lockdown. Physically distanced
Interviews were audio-recorded, transcribed verbatim and thematically analysed.
Findings: The main identified themes were: learning to self-manage, psychological and emotional
resilience, occupational disruption and redefining connectedness. The participants’ previous
knowledge and experience empowered them to make healthy decisions and establish meaningful
routines to curb the adverse effects of occupational disruption. Their pre-COVID realities influenced
their perspectives and adaptability. The lockdown prompted them to re-evaluate their relationships,
social opportunities, emotional status, loss of roles and identity.
Conclusion: The participants’ experiences of lockdown offer an insight into a period of occupational
disruption for those who were particularly vulnerable, with contributing evidence for the value of
meaningful occupations, providing person-centred care, enhancing occupational balance, and
promoting psychological, emotional and social wellbeing.Health Education England (Diversifying the Allied Health Professions: Factors Influencing Career Choices of Racially Minoritized Students in London); Brunel University London ref: AR05 (TitleImpact of Disrupting WEIRD Epistemic Dominance on Race Awarding Gap)
Resonant neutrino spin-flavor precession and supernova shock revival
A new mechanism of supernova shock revival is proposed, which involves
resonant spin--flavor precession of neutrinos with a transition magnetic moment
in the magnetic field of the supernova. The mechanism can be operative in
supernovae for transition magnetic moments as small as provided
the neutrino mass squared difference is in the range . It is shown that this mechanism can increase the
neutrino--induced shock reheating energy by about 60\%.Comment: 16 pages, latex, 2 figures. added few reference
Virologically confirmed population-based burden of hospitalization caused by influenza a and b among children in Hong Kong
Background. We sought to determine the virologically confirmed hospitalization rates associated with influenza virus infection among Hong Kong children. Methods. Patients <18 years of age who lived on Hong Kong Island (a separate island within Hong Kong) and were admitted to either of the only 2 public hospitals on the island for a febrile acute respiratory infection on 1 fixed day of the week in each hospital from October 2003 through September 2006 were prospectively recruited. These 2 hospitals together accounted for 72.5% of all general pediatric admissions in Hong Kong Island with a known population denominator. Nasopharyngeal aspirates were obtained from all recruited patients and were tested for influenza A and influenza B viruses by direct antigen detection and culture. Results. All cases of influenza A during 2003-2004 were caused by H3N2 virus, whereas 85.7% of cases during 2004-2005 were due to H3N2 virus, and 93.5% during 2005-2006 were due to H1N1 virus. During 2004-2005, infants <1 year of age had the highest rate of hospitalization for influenza A (103.8 cases per 10,000 population), whereas children 1 year of age had the highest rate of hospitalization during the other 2 seasons (95.5 and 54.6 cases per 10,000 population during 2003-2004 and 2005-2006, respectively). A protection rate of 25%, presumably attributable to maternal antibodies, was seen in infants <1 year of age who were hospitalized during 2003-2004 with infection due to an H3N2 virus that had been in circulation. The hospitalization rates for influenza B were highest among children 2-4 years of age. Conclusions. This population-based study of hospitalizations due to virologically confirmed influenza demonstrated a very high burden of disease among young children in Hong Kong. The morbidity varied with virus type, subtype, and antigenic variants. © 2009 by the Infectious Diseases Society of America. All rights reserved.published_or_final_versio
Intraductal papillary mucinous tumor of bile ducts radiologic and pathologic features: a case report
We report a case of a 67-year-old Caucasian man with right upper quadrant abdominal pain. He underwent radiologic investigations that revealed a solid, focal mass, at the V hepatic segment. Because a definitive diagnosis, based on imaging appearance of the lesion, was impossible in our case, we performed a hystopathological investigation but the biopsies were inconclusive. So, the definitive diagnosis of intraductal papillary mucinous tumor of bile ducts was made on surgical resected material
